My nephew, Malachi Thomas Schaefer, was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia at 14 months of age. He was treated at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, Texas where he endured several rounds of chemotherapy. Malachi passed from this world at 19 months of age. During his short life, he taught us all very important lessons – find joy in every day, make friends with all you come into contact with, demonstrate toughness when faced with obstacles, trust those that love you most to do the best for you, and love big all along the way. Cancer took his life, but he has gone onto his reward – to a place where there is no pain, no sadness, no despair – only light, goodness, and the presence of God.
